Probably it was a diesel train. As steam engine were used in the late 19th
century and the passage is written in 20th century. Moreover the
train was fast on the other hand the steam trains were not so fast.

What does this mean?
Ans: Insignificant means worthless. Here
insignificant means unnecessary station. In the story the writer got in a freight
train. Unfortunately it was a simply local train. Moreover it was very slow and
it was stopping many unnecessary stations.

Ans: Sensation means: a
state of excited feeling or interest caused among a number of persons or throughout a community, as by some rumor or occurrence. When Davies
jumped on to catch the train.Insted of catching the train Davies fall on the
railway track. And the right foot of his was severed from the ankle. Many men
and journalists gathered there and they took photos of Davies to publish in the
local Media.
