Ans: As there was snow on the railway track I think that the incident took place in winter.
2.    What kind of train was it- diesel, electric or steam? How do you know?
Ans:It was neither an electric nor a steam train. Probably it was a diesel train. As steam engine were used in the late 19th century and the passage is written in 20th century. Moreover the train was fast on the other hand the steam trains were not so fast.
3.    What in the story is described as ‘insignificant’? What does this mean?
Ans: Insignificant means worthless. Here insignificant means unnecessary station. In the story the writer got in a freight train. Unfortunately it was a simply local train. Moreover it was very slow and it was stopping many unnecessary stations.

4.     How did the author and his companion know that the train was shortly going to arrive at the station?
Ans: Seeing the passengers and their luggage’s that were placed in readiness and a number of curious people, the author and his companion knew that the train was shortly going to arrive at the station.
5.    Why did Davies allow his companion to jump on the train first?
Ans: When the train whistled almost before they ready and pulled slowly out of the station. The writer allowed his companion the advantage of being the first to jump, owing to his maimed hand.
6.    What is meant by a ‘blind baggage car’?

Ans: The phrase “Blind baggage car” means a railway baggage, express, or postal car that has no door or opening at one end; especially:  one immediately behind a tender.

7.    Does Davies blame the man for the accident? How does do we know?
Ans: At first, when the train was moving, Davies allowed his companion to jump on the train and then he. When his companion took his place, he didn’t give any chance to Davies so that he may jump on the train. Davies shouted to him to make room for him (Davies). After that Davies thought that his friend made roam for him and he jumped to the train and fall on the railway track. From the discussion we may say that Davies blamed the man for the accident.
8.     Why does a sensation caused in local press? What does this mean?
Ans: Sensation means: a state of excited feeling or interest caused among a number of persons or throughout a community, as by some rumor or occurrence. When Davies jumped on to catch the train.Insted of catching the train Davies fall on the railway track. And the right foot of his was severed from the ankle. Many men and journalists gathered there and they took photos of Davies to publish in the local Media.

1)    We slipped out unobserved and took possession of an empty car. 
Explanation: The above line is taken from the W.H Davies’ famous essay “A Voice in the Dark”. In the sentence the writer described that at the time of their waiting in the Renfrew station for the fast train.They had to go 500 hundred miles away from the station.They prepared to go there without buying tickets. So they took possession in an empty car although they slipped at that time but no one observed that.
2)    With this object we sat in the station's waiting room till evening. 
Ans: The above line is taken from the W.H Davies’ famous essay “A Voice in the Dark”. In the sentence the writer described that they were waiting in the Renfrew station for the fast train with all of their bags and baggage.

3)    'Come,' I said, 'there is no time to lose.' 
Expanation: The above line is taken from the W.H Davies’ famous essay “A Voice in the Dark”. In the sentence the writer described that the fast passenger train would be appeared within a short time. So they should ready to catch the train. If they loss their time they should miss their opportunity of catching the train.

    1. Yes the train was steam train as it is written in the chapter that 'it streamed into into the station without making much noise for the days will slippery there still be much ice and snow on the track

  2. This book is written in 1908, therefore the train, according to me, may probably would have been a steam train.😏🙂

  5. I think it is steam train because when we look carefully at the picture the smoke came out of the train and a diesel train does not come out . But when we read carefully it is said that it is a fast train it means a diesel train . I couldnot know it is of diesel or steam train
